New Picture (1)Ustawi, Kiswahili word for Prosperity, is an initiative that is formed out of the conviction that for Kenya to achieve food security, we all must take a long term approach. In the past decade, unpredictable weather patterns have caused the rains to fail and when they came, they were too inadequate to support the growth of crops to feed Kenyans.

The initiative has been designed to rally all of us to support communities all
over the country to achieve food security.

This is being done by empowering them to use new agricultural methods such as Greenhouse farming and drip irrigation among others.

Also, the communities are being encouraged to grow more drought resistant crops that people depended on in times of hardship in the old days. These include cassava, millet, sorghum and potatoes.

The Ustawi initiative is driven by three core values:

  1. That this a problem to everyone in Kenya regardless of your status; we all must participate
  2. That every human being has a right to food – regardless of their station in life
  3. That together, we can achieve food security.

Together, we can achieve food security.

Ustawi - abundance

You too can

be a part of this initiative

How you can participate:

• Start working together with the people around you and grow some
food. Whether it be in your shamba or in your backyard, every
plant, every crop counts
• You can contribute a little money to enable communities to grow
more food

  • 500 shillings will buy a season’s seeds
  • 5,000 shillings will buy a water tank to help a community store water
  • 8,000 shillings will buy a KickStart pump that will enable farmers to easily get water from the water source to the crops
  • 10, 000 will buy a 500m long drip irrigation system
  • 10,000 will buy inputs for one season
  • 140,000 shillings will buy a full farmers kit for a community.

A farmers kit from AMIRAN Kenya includes:-

  • two types of seeds for a full season
  • fertilizer for a full season
  • a 600 litre water tank
  • a full drip irrigation system
  • a green house
  • and more
You just have to start with what you can.

Haba na haba hujaza kibaba.

Just 100 shillings a month will go a long way in helping.
