It is the life where children play outside pretending they are farmers who grow those fruits that they love so much: succulent mangoes, juicy oranges, big yellow bananas. It is the life where mothers marvel at the size of the crops that have come from the farm, weighing the enormous sweet potatoes, checking the long mature maize combs and laughing in sheer joy at the colour of the healthy bright green spinach.
It is the life where young men in the city say to their suitors, “come, i’ll cook for you. I’ll make a gourmet meal that will strum the music of your heart.” They are secure in the knowledge, that the food that mum sent from ushago is plenty and what she didn’t send is cheap in the kiosk outside.
I want to live in abundance.
Even when the rains fail…
The rains have failed in the last few years, leaving the fields and farms dry and farmers’ hopes around the country at an all time low. Food costs a lot of money in the city and even more in the sun scorched rural areas where many poor people starve because there is little in their
pockets and even less in the granary. But even when the rains fail, it is possible, for us to live in
abundance, with food in every kitchen, granary and city market place and an income in every pocket and purse. It is possible, that as a country, Kenya can move away from perennial
food relief efforts to attain food security.
I want prosperity
While Kenya is held back by many challenges, imagine a life where we all bit the bullet and took a long term approach to our problems.
Imagine what life would be like if we all harvested water in every part of our compounds and stored it well, if we used the best methods to plant more food and when it grew, if we stored and kept it so that it lasted for a long time. Imagine what life would be like if we planted trees everywhere and attracted the rains once again. Imagine what our lives would be like if we solved our problems for posterity rather than for expedience.
